How to Break Free from the Whirlwind and Focus on What Matters

business growth business strategy delegation leadership time management Nov 13, 2024

Look at your day today and tell me how much free time you have to conquer something new. Odds are really good you don’t have much bandwidth available. When you’re being buffeted in the day to day, how do you create time for new initiatives, for strategy, for the bigger picture, for the future?

You can’t throw a rock on the internet without hitting someone who is currently talking about time-blocking. Now, I don’t advocate throwing rocks, but you get my point. If the problem were as simple as a little discipline with your calendar we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Time-blocking might help, but it’s not a panacea. You definitely need to reconsider how you’re using your time. You might even need to reconsider how your business is spending its limited resources. This is a systemic problem.

So how do we fix the system?

When we talk about strategy we often talk about what we will do and what we won’t do. The same applies to you and your business.

What do you personally need to do? What can, or should, other people do instead? What can be automated? (AI anybody?) What processes can you document that will streamline their use and delegation?

And beyond need, what should you be focused on? What will have the maximum impact? What low-impact items can you delay, or put down entirely?

What about your business? All of the same questions apply. Do you need to meet with those people this week or can it happen next week? Next month? Never?

Time management is important for sure, but don’t forget the rest. Prioritization. Delegation. Automation. Systemization. You can come up with the words as well as I can. But defining what impact you want to optimize for is a good first step.

Are you trying to grow your business? What does that mean to you? To achieve that growth do you, or does your team, need the bandwidth for new initiatives? You’ve heard me say it before. Everything on your plate is not of utmost importance. If it is, nothing on your plate is of utmost importance.

So how do you reduce the Whirlwind?

Bit by bit. You say No to things. You trust your team more. You focus on what is absolutely essential. You hold your ground. You focus on impact. Get started!
