Uncovering Profit Drivers: How Asking ‘Why’ Leads to Sustainable Growth

The difference between profit and revenue is critical, yet it’s easy to conflate the two. While raising revenue often boosts profit, assuming one automatically translates to the other can obscure the path to sustainable profitability.

To make truly strategic decisions, start by peeling back the layers of understanding in your business. Begin with a product audit, examining profit margins and identifying which products drive the majority of your profit. You’ll likely find that a small percentage of offerings contribute disproportionately to your bottom line.

Next, dig into the “why” behind this. Is it because these products have higher profit margins? Or is it a matter of higher sales volume? Identifying the root causes allows you to refine your strategy rather than just assuming you need to sell more of everything.

Here’s where you become the scientist of your own business. Form hypotheses about what’s driving these results, then test them to see where you land. If, for example, you find that higher sales volume is responsible for profitability, the instinct might be to simply sell more of that product. And while that’s a sound approach, it’s worth pausing to ask, Why is this particular product selling more?

Consider what this could reveal about your consumers. Are they buying this product because of its price point? Is there a feature they’re valuing more than expected? Each answer gives you more insight and helps refine your direction.

This deeper understanding might even shift how you see your business. Perhaps you set out to be known for solving Problem X, but what if your customers see you as the solution to Problem Y? That revelation could transform your approach and open up new growth opportunities.

The takeaway? Sustainable growth doesn’t just come from selling more; it’s about consistently digging deeper, asking “why” at every step, and learning from the answers. With every layer you peel back, you gain clarity and insight, allowing for more informed, strategic decisions.
